It monitors the pressure differential across the air metering orifice; once airflow reaches the required threshold, the switch closes the circuit to the hot surface igniter (HSI), which lights the gas air mixture. During a typical heating call, the blower and HSI energize simultaneously.

Looks like a silly little thing, I am not a coffee enthusiast. But it does exactly what it is supposed to do and with high quality. The device (a stretch to call it that) is made of sturdy materials including the needles. They give you two different thicknesses of needles, one for expressi (0.3) and one set for coffee grinds (0.4). Each comes wth some spares. The stand is well designed and keeps grinds from spreading all over. It is very elegant design. I use this with a dosing funnel on my portafilter. Not the cheapest one could buy but well worth the money.
